In a blog post for Ebony, a young woman tells a story of meeting a great guy on vacation in the Bahamas, falling for him, dating for six months, and then upon bringing him to meet her parents, finding out that HE WAS HER HALF-BROTHER.

We cut through the crowd to my dad, who had his back to us; he was laughing his heart out until he turned around to shake Corey’s hand. He dropped his plate of ribs and his mouth to the floor. Corey could only manage one word: “Dad?” My confused family members and I echoed him. “Dad?!” Corey turned and ran out, my father hot on his heels and me left confused. That’s when my uncle came over and told all of us that my boyfriend Corey was my father’s son, my brother.

That’s right: the guy she had been “dating, screwing and loving… for over 6 months” was her very own sibling from her father’s “secret family” which included a loving mother, son, and two daughters.

The author goes on to say that her life since the incident has been full of turmoil – including her parents’ divorce and years of therapy. What’s the moral of the story?
