Why Do People Care About the Sexual Behavior of Others?
Now THIS is an interesting study. I know, I know, reading about research sounds like a bummer (not nearly as much fun as ogling this bombshell’s booty), but this stuff is actually pretty enlightening, especially for us casual daters who are tired of being judged for enjoying the single life, not settling, and having sexy (but safe) fun in the bedroom with anyone we want.
According to a new study detailed in the Atlantic, peoples’ perception of promiscuity is related to their beliefs about male – female financial dynamics. That is to say, if someone sees women as being dependent on their boyfriends or husbands, they are also more likely to believe that casual sex is shameful, negative, and unbecoming – of BOTH sexes. Weird, yes, but are there any clues to why?
Via The Atlantic:
In environments in which female economic dependence on a mate is higher, both a woman and her mate have a greater interest in maximizing paternity certainty. Because promiscuity undermines paternity certainty, both men and women should be more opposed to promiscuity by both sexes.
SCIENCE! It’s interesting to think that when someone judges you as being “slutty,” it might just be their brain saying “that woman’s offspring are going to have an unidentifiable paternity thus devaluing both male and female as worthy biological contributors.”
I guess now if anyone ever calls you a ho you can shoot back “OH YEAH, WHY DON’T YOU GO BACK TO MEDIEVAL TIMES AND BEHEAD YOUR OWN WIFE THEN, HENRY VIII.” (History joke – HUZZAH!)
What do you think about casual daters? Do you think it’s science or are people just judgey a**holes?
