Vera Wang Splits From Husband of 23 Years
As a woman who spends her life dedicated to creating the dresses that women wear while walking down the aisle, you might think that wedding dress designer Vera Wang would be a romantic – a woman with a belief in lifelong love and devotion. However, that has never been the case for Vera – she has openly admitted that she never thought she’d be married, but believed she’d be a “fashion nun” for the rest of her life.
But wed she did, in 1989, at the request of her friends, to her computer exec boyfriend Arthur Becker. She reportedly once told the NY Daily News:
“Ralph Lauren said, “Get yourself a husband and a family.” Anna [Wintour] said, “You have got to get a family going here. You’ve been single for three decades now.” So I married my husband.
‘There are days I’m not happy I did it, but there are days I’m thrilled – I mean, he has always understood my nature, which is that it’s always about product.'”
It seems that Vera should have followed her instincts and remained single, because despite having two daughters and nearly 23 anniversaries, the couple have decided to separate. The president of her company says, ‘Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters.’
The question that is front and center in my mind, is whether or not Vera believes in marriage as an institution. When she is meticulously designing dresses for celebrities like “Chelsea Clinton, Ivanka Trump, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Garner, Sharon Stone, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kate Hudson, and most recently, Kim Kardashian,” does she just treat it like another beautiful gown for an event? Or does she truly believe she is creating a memory for a woman who will be married until her dying day?
Wait a second.
“… most recently, Kim Kardashian.”
GASP! She probably saw the publicity stunt disaster that was the Kardashian-Humphries marriage and was like, “yeeeeeah, f*** this. I’m out.” DAMN YOU, KIM KARDAAAAAASHIIIIIAAAAANNNNN!
