Top 10 Bands To Watch This Coachella
As you’ve probably heard from half your Facebook news feed, Coachella Valley Music Festival is just around the corner, and yours truly is getting JUST PLUM EXCITED about heading into the desert for three days of great music, debaucherous drinking, and people watching. Of course, much of the festival’s appeal comes from the half naked women running around and the guys on mescaline and the insane displays of pyrotechnics, but in all honesty, the most important part of this weekend is the music, so here are BCU’s top 10 bands to watch at Coachella:
10. Kanye West
Mainly for his showmanship, we look forward to seeing Kanye and whatever insane art show he brings along with him. We also expect him to bring some sort of guest star, and secretly I’m keeping my fingers crossed for either Rihanna or Katy Perry, although I’d never admit it to my friends. Really though, he makes his appearance Sunday when we’re all sunburnt and tired, and reports say he tends to show up late. Do us all a fave and be punctual, ok dude?
9. Duran Duran
It’s not Coachella unless a band shows up from the 1980s, and this year they have chosen the group behind such hits as “I Ran,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” and “Rio.” This is one of those bands that you’ll wander by without paying attention until you realize they’re playing a song you remember from your childhood.
8. The Chemical Brothers
I would have had no idea who these guys were, but seriously, go on YouTube and listen to the soundtrack for the movie Hanna, and tell me that doesn’t sound awesome.
7. Ms. Lauryn Hill
She was a massive hit back in the 90s and then went, um… a little crazy. Friday evening will see one of her first comeback shows and were really excited to see if she can remind us why we all fell in love with her “Doo Wop” style.
6. Wiz Khalifa
The scrawny little mastermind behind Black and Yellow goes on Sunday afternoon, so if you can drag yourself from your campground out into the blazing sun, you’ll be sure to get a smoke-filled hip hop sesh to remember.
5. The Black Keys
This up-and-coming band put on a phenomenal live show, and you’d be sad to miss their foot tapping blues-rock on Friday night, right before the headliners. Trust us – you’ll love em.
4. Delta Spirit
This local San Diego band is another early bird, playing in the afternoon on Saturday. They’re the perfect type of music for a sunny afternoon though, so grab yourself some water (or a beer) and check em out before they get too big!
3. The Strokes
The brilliant minds behind the 2001 album Is This It is back with a new album and WE ARE LOVING IT. They go on stage right before Kanye on Sunday, so make sure you swing by the Coachella stage for a listen before you black out from three days of heat exhaustion and booze poisoning.
2. Mumford and Sons
Oh boy oh boy, these guys are my new favorite band. Their folksy sound is so much different than most of the recent rock releases and it’s the perfect music to start your Saturday night before the insane sh** show that is going to be…
1. Arcade Fire
The Canadian band that made waves this year when they beat out the top pop singers for Album of the Year at the Grammys are just as good as that award implies, and you’d be CRAZY to miss them on Saturday night at 11:20 on the Coachella stage. Saturday is usually the biggest day to party, but make sure that you save some sanity to check out this 7 piece group whose hit song “Wake Up” rocked the airwaves for the movie Where The Wild Things Are in 2010.
If you end up at Coachella and check out a band we haven’t listed here, let us know who you loved (and who you loathed) on Monday!
