The Coachella 2010 Experience
This post should have been written, approved, and posted at least two days ago, but unfortunately the brain power of yours truly has just recently regained full power since this past weekend. So now, here goes…
The Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival occurs every year in the third weekend of April in Indio, CA. It brings together incredible artists and great musical acts that pull in crowds in the tens of thousands. This year was no exception, with headliners like the Gorillaz, Muse, DJ Tiesto, and the most famous, Jay-freakin-Z.
Your BCU staff writer was present for the debauchery that is the Coachella weekend, and I thought I’d share with you a few of the highlights (and lowlights) of the weekend.
+ Jay-Z and Beyonce singing “Young Forever.” Pretty sure Hova had tossed back a few drinks (or a few joints) because he was looking tipsy! However, Beyonce Knowles pulled an absolutely phenomenal performance of the chorus and blew the crowd away. It was a great show.
– I MISSED THAT SHOW, because some (insert expletive) jerk sold me a fake ticket. Note to all the readers: do NOT buy Ticketmaster tickets on Craigslist.com, because someone out there has a Ticketmaster machine and can print any ticket. I ended up not getting a wristband till Saturday morning. I’m going to find you, Mr. Weekend Ruiner!
+ The party never stopped. From Friday evening to Monday morning, there was ALWAYS someone partying who wanted you to join them. Mind you, some people were partying a little harder than others (I witnessed on more than one occasion someone on Mescaline pulling off their clothes and running naked around the camp grounds yelling “I’M A BIIIIIIIRD. I’M A BIIIIIRD!” ), but all in all, it was over 50,000 of the most fun people in the world all in one square mile.
– Partying too hard has its consequences. I personally threw up four times, saw three people wheeled out on stretchers, and even was the unfortunate recipient of a rough lookin’ black eye. Note to self: do not sit near hula hoopers on PCP.
+ The ART. There were at least 15 different art tents set up with light shows, fire vortexes, crazy paintings, and even a neon playground with swings and a roller skate rink (bad idea for the above kids on PCP. I’m sure there were some head injuries).
– The HEAT. Dear sweet baby ladybugs, the HEAT. During the day, temperatures peaked at 102 degrees. And with the world’s most stagnant wind sitting on your shoulders, you might as well be wearing a fur coat in the Sahara. And when your method of hydrating is drinking Bud Light instead of Vodka, it’s hard not to get some pretty rough hangovers.
All in all, Coachella 2010 was a great experience. We met some great people, learned some lessons, and saw some performances that we’ll never forget. Stay updated on the Coachella website and find out if one of your favorite bands is playing in Coachella 2011! See you there!
