Just Another Reason to Avoid Marriage
In your every day, average court room, a divorce settlement is rocky, emotional, and stressful. Dividing assets and custody of children and pets can take a severe toll on ones psyche. However, in the world of multi-million dollar (and sometimes billion dollar) marriages, the divorce settlements reach national headlines. Like, say you just happened to own an entire baseball team, like, oh I don’t know, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jamie and Frank McCourt are currently undergoing a very high-profile divorce, chock full of drama — including the fact that Mrs. McCourt doesn’t want to give up ownership of the LA Dodgers although the postnuptial agreement explicitly gives sole ownership of the sports team to her husband.
Her reasoning for completely disregarding the legal documentation? She didn’t read it. Oh, and why didn’t she read it, you might ask? Because “reviewing legal documents [is] boring,” she said in a deposition earlier this year. Perfectly acceptable argument for a grown-up adult with hundred of millions of dollars and most likely some interest in keeping said hundreds of millions of dollars. Why ensure that your future stake in the family business is secure, if the legal documents don’t even have pictures to go along with the big boring words?! BO-RING, NO THANKS.
Needless to say, we chalk this up to our team. Anti-marriage: 4,785, Pro-marriage: negative infinity.
Oh PS, her driver ran someone over in the parking lot with her Range Rover. So… you know. 4,786.
