According to a new study published at Science Daily, the reason your bad boy twin brother gets laid, and you don’t, may all be in the emotions. Based on study performed by the University of British Columbia, men who look happier are more likely to be seen only in a “friendly social” way, whereas men who seem more brooding or proud are seen in a more sexual light.

The study examined 1000 participants, showing them pictures of a member of the opposite sex in various emotions, from happy, to proud, to ashamed or brooding. While the men were most attracted to happy women and least attracted to those who looked arrogant, women went with the stereotype, being far more attracted to men who either looked proud or brooding, and being least attracted to men who looked… you guessed it – happy.

So WHY are women so unattracted to happy guys? According to the study, scientists believe it may be because smiling implies a lack of dominance, and women, biologically and historically, look for traits that show masculinity, because “they imply status, competence and an ability to provide for a partner and offspring.”

So men, not that you should go out of your way to be a jerk or look like you’re tougher than you really are, but maybe if you’re on the hunt at a local bar, keep that silly grin off your face when you’re checking out the ladies. Otherwise, the ladies will definitely come up to you, but it’ll be to ask you if you wanna chat about your much cuter, pissed off friend.
