FDA Says No to Female Viagra
While NFL games are punctuated every 8 minutes by Cialis and Viagra commercials featuring handsome silver-foxes about to get it on with their equally sexy companions, women around the world are still suffering from low libido. But apparently that doesn’t matter to the FDA, who have once again rejected Sprout Pharmaceutical’s flibanserin pill, which is said to create arousal in women. This comes as a disappointment, considering “43 percent of women experience some sort of sexual dysfunction and one in 10 women have low desire.”
Via Bloomberg:
In clinical trials, Sprout’s pill almost doubled the increase women saw in satisfying sexual experiences over a month’s time compared with patients who took a placebo, the company said. The agency’s decision contrasts with its review of drugs to treat male sexual dysfunction, Cindy Whitehead, president and chief operating officer at Sprout, said in an interview.
“I do believe that women deserve a solution to their most common form of sexual dysfunction,” Whitehead said. “Flibanserin has been in 11,000 patients at this point. It’s pretty well defined.”
Unfortunately, US regulators claim that the “modest effect” of the drug is outweighed by side effects like fatigue and nausea and have rejected it – so you won’t be seeing fliberanserin on the shelves any time soon.
