Condoms Are Making a Comeback!
While it’s almost universally agreed that condoms are a necessary evil, in the last year Vice reports that the #1 used form of sexual protection is “making a comeback,” and somehow becoming, dare we say, TRENDY?
They’re popping up in marketing moments everywhere, from party favours at launches from Heaven by Marc Jacobs’ London opening party in 2023 to Big Mamma Group’s Circo Populare restaurant in 2019. Julia Fox, ever on the zeitgeist, recently wore a sheer tube-top adorned with rubbers, replete with matching bag and boots.
Oh, ok, wait. This isn’t quite the comeback we were thinking of. Well then, can we at least assume that this rise in condom exposure across the pond means more Brits are having safer sex? Let’s ask the UK gov:
In 2022 there were 392,453 diagnoses of new STIs among England residents, an increase of 23.8% compared to 2021 (317,022), and both gonorrhoea and syphilis have returned to the high levels reported in 2019 (prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic).
Oh. Womp womp. Glove your junk, men!
