The Modern Prostitute
It looks as though science is finally learning what movies, music, and fashion have always known: that sex sells. Wired Magazine, for example, has just released a study about the modern state of prostitution, which I imagine will get more hits than every medical, biological, and technological post they’ve ever done, combined.
Sudhir Venkatesh, a sociology professor from Columbia, spent 12 months on the streets of New York City, interviewing sex workers of all sorts, from the white-collar escorts to the Harlem streetwalkers, and came out the other side with an analysis on surviving in a digital world with a very non-digital skill. He studied how tech tools have transformed the profession of prostitution in the past twenty years, and how the rise of the cell phones and the internet have created an environment where prostitution (especially high-class escorting) is less looked down upon, and where men are willing to pay top-dollar for the experience of their choice.
