Keep Relationships Simple By Staying Single
It seems like nothing lasts anymore. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are getting divorced (apparently Ben was stepping out with the nanny); Gwen Stefani and longtime husband Gavin Rossdale are reportedly splitting as well (again, because of the nanny); Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are finally getting their divorce after years of separation; and even Kermit and Miss Piggy are calling it quits!
With social media and the increasing ubiquity of the Internet, the lines are getting more blurred as to what actually constitutes “cheating” when it comes to online interactions. If you never touch in real life does it still count? What if you’ve never met the person? Does that make it better or worse? Whether you’re looking for something on the side online or in real life, the separation makes little difference when your girl finds out.
Following the potential exposure of millions of cheaters after the Ashley Madison hacking scandal, there’s a lot of talk about the future of fidelity in the digital world. The Internet provides too many options, sexual and otherwise, that can be both tempting and hard to ignore. Even if you follow a “look but don’t touch” policy, emotional affairs can be just as damaging as physically cheating. Sometimes, they’re even worse. While there might be plenty of ways to creep around for an affair, there are just as many ways to be found out. The risk of being discovered and the ensuing aftermath are hardly worth the drama.
The Guardian reports that 42 percent of people using popular hook-up app Tinder already have a partner. Better hope Tinder doesn’t get hacked, too, or a lot of people are going to be looking for a new partner—or buying Kobe rings.
“Secrets kill,” clinical psychologist and couples therapist Dr. Marlene Wasserman told The Citizen. “At the same time, it’s a very personal thing. Once you get caught, it’s the most devastating thing in the world. If you take on the responsibility of having an affair, you should take on the responsibility of the result.”
But cheating isn’t just damaging to your relationship, because it can be bad for your physical health, too! In a study on the effects of cheating by Adam & Eve, it was found that men are more likely to have heart attacks while cheating than when they’re being faithful. Also, apparently most of the men who die during sex were having an affair. That’s right, cheating increases a guy’s likelihood that he will die during sex.
You can avoid these dangers easily enough by simply using your brain. Much of it boils down to following basic rules for common sense. If what you’re doing feels wrong or you wouldn’t want anyone else to see you doing it, then you probably shouldn’t be. It’s really that easy. Nothing on the internet is safe and unless you’re cool with the entire world finding out what you’re up to, don’t do anything you wouldn’t want them to know.
Ultimately, the best course of action is to simply stay single and enjoy yourself until you feel you’re really ready to settle down. If you don’t think you’re ready for committed relationship then you’re not really being fair to your potential partner or yourself. By taking your time and being responsible about the way you romance you can relieve yourself of a lot of potential stress just by continuing to enjoy the single life.
