Better Female Condoms Are Coming!
After last week’s interesting safe sex news that a gentleman had created a “just the tip” condom, we admit we were a little creeped out. The thought of ADHESIVE on your most sensitive man parts just didn’t seem that great (especially since it left the rest of your manhood susceptible to various STIs. No thanks. However, this news about contraception made us a little happier: according to Jezebel, a newly crafted female condom may be on the way! Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (props!), custom condom company TheyFit is working to create a female condom unlike the baggy, embarrassing plastic bag we know from the 80s. Via Indiana Public Media:
IU researcher Debby Herbenick and Frank Sadlo, founder of the custom condom company TheyFit, are creating a female condom that has a more elliptical shape as opposed to the more traditional round one, making it fit more naturally with the female body.
“Female condoms are really in their infancy. There are very few designs,” Herbenick says. “Current condoms are big and baggy and really don’t match a female’s anatomy.”
[…]
“Many men just refuse to use condoms, so if a woman’s partner refuses to use a condom or complains about a condom, she can say I’ll use one,” Herbenick says. “It provides a female-initiated or a female-controlled option.”
The funding is an 18 month grant, during which the researchers will finalize their design, search for a manufacturer and create a prototype.
Obviously, we look forward to the approval of a contraceptive device that puts women in control of their bodies, and are crossing our fingers that it still offers the same skin-on-skin feeling of unprotected sex, without the worry of infection or unplanned pregnancy.
On the other hand, we’re kinda shocked that there are men out there who would “refuse to use condoms.” Do they not care about their sexual health or the fact that they could VERY easily become fathers for life after one 15-minute quickie in a bar bathroom? Hey, ladies sleeping with dudes who “refuse” to wear condoms? We think it’s time to REFUSE their advances. They don’t deserve you!

@CocaoMix – No one EVER said that it’s ‘solely the responsibility of women’ to protect yourselves. Wow! I cannot BELIEVE you’d make such an idiotic statement after reading this AND while carrying the knowledge that YOU WOMEN HAVE MORE THAN 30 forms of birth control available to you. And for GOOD REASON, TOO. Because… YES. You ARE the ones who bare most of the responsibility considering you HAVE so many options PLUS are most often the ones who are ‘stuck with the children’ AFTER failing to take the necessary precautions. You sound like another FemiNazi.
Back to the article at hand. I do hope that, as the editor’s stated, this ‘new & improved’ female condom offers a ‘skin-on-skin’ feeling similar to what unprotected sex offers, because simply re shaping it to that of a woman’s vaginal opening would be a SERIOUS waste of funding AND a blatant display of moronic thinking on the part of the (so-called) ‘researchers’.
Very well-written article, also. Bravo, BCU Girl. Bravo. =)

Really!?? Smh that’s just incredulous. Now women have to wear the condom too? Let’s take count. Birth control pills, birth control shots, iud, nuva ring, morning after pill, plan b, tubal ligation, abortion, and if all else fails we have to carry deliver and care for the children. When did birth control become solely the responsibity of women?
