Vegas Police Tell Girls Sex Will Kill Them
Oh Vegas. The home of sexy circuses, wild strip clubs, and of course, people so horny they can’t wait to get on solid ground before getting nasty. Also a thing in Vegas? A police force that is telling young girls that sex is a one-way ticket to DEATH.
Via The Huffington Post:
During an event to promote abstinence, a Las Vegas policewoman [Regina Coward] told a room full of girls and their parents that premarital sex can lead to prostitution, sex-trafficking, drugs and death.
Coward showed the audience video interviews of pimps and prostitutes and graphic images of drug abusers. She also brought in two female performers from the “Toe-Tag Monologues” who acted out the stories of two women whose life choices result in death; the performances ended with the actors getting into body bags on a gurney.
Now, we understand that it’s important to let teens know that sex can come with a price. Wearing protection and choosing trustworthy partners are two extremely important factors that all sexually active adults should be sure of. However, pulling a hard Coach Carr from Mean Girls never helped anyone. It’s been proven:
According to a 2012 study by the Guttmacher Institute for sexual and reproductive health, “research shows that abstinence-only strategies may deter contraceptive use among sexually active teens, increasing their risk of unintended pregnancy and STIs.”
Similarly, a 2008 study out of Johns Hopkins University showed that teens who make virginity pledges — a vow to hold off on sex until marriage — were just as likely to engage in premarital sex as non-pledgers but more likely to practice unprotected sex.
So thanks, Regina Coward. We’re sure that scaring the shit out of young women and making them fear their sexuality is going to work out FANTASTICALLY. Especially in a city where anyone over the age of 21 is probably surrounded by this every weekend.
