Why Do People Choose Booty Calls?
B-b-b-booty calls! We haven’t had a good chat about the science behind our favorite type of relationship in a long time – but luckily the smarty-panties over at LiveScience gave us a sweet new study to discuss, and that is: Why do people choose booty calls over one-night stands or long-term relationships? If you asked us we’d say, “uh, DUH, ‘cuz they’re AWESOME?” but apparently scientists need a little more info than that to make it a legit study. So, here’s what we learned from Peter Jonason, a psychologist at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, and his study on BOOTY CALLS:
Booty calls and friends-with-benefits relationships are pretty much the same dang thing
Something about the word “booty call” seems to make people feel dirty, but in terms of reasons why people do it – they’re the same as having a “friend with benefits.” So if you’re trying to wrangle up a new member on your booty call list, we recommend calling them a “friend… with benefits” instead!
Booty callers aren’t looking for social support, just sex!
This is something we’ve always known – that booty callers are in general more level-headed and independent, and aren’t looking for social support. They have a good group of friends or close family, and aren’t in need of someone to whine to or cuddle with. They just wanna have a good time and get some fun casual sex!
Relationships are more about social support than sex
On the other hand, long-term relationships are more about social support and having a marriage “trial run,” and aren’t even about sex all that much. What a bummer! Of course it’s important to have healthy relationships and friendships with people who care about your well-being, but putting sex LAST on the list of needs? YIKES!
People who are comfortable with their sexuality find booty calls more functional
This is another “duh” finding for us, but we’re glad that it’s getting some legitimate notice in the science community. It’s not that single folks who like booty calls are gross sex-crazed pervs, it’s just that they find booty calls to be more functional, smarter, and less stressful than a full blown relationship. There’s nothing wrong with being comfortable with your sexuality, and not feeling like you need to be in a relationship to explore various facets of your sex life without commitment! SHOCKER: different types of people enjoy different types of relationships. Maybe you’re a gamer who likes connecting with people online, but don’t really care to meet in public. Or maybe you like going to intramural softball games and meeting tons of folks who you may never hang out with again. Perhaps you are married and only ever hang out with your spouse… and maybe you’re a social butterfly who likes casual hookups with people you trust! What’s the similarity between these various types of relationships? THEY’RE ALL FINE.
This study may be nothing new to us folks who have always been #teamSINGLE, but we hope that others read it and realize that booty calls are becoming mainstream and there ain’t nothin’ you can do about it. Remember when Zach Morris had a giant cell phone and you thought, “that’ll never catch on”…? Yep. BOOM.
