Online Dating 101: Your First Steps
Maybe it’s your first time being single in a while. Maybe you’re feeling frisky but don’t wanna commit to a long-term relationship. Or maybe you’re just curious about what internet dating could offer for you. Whatever your reason for trying online dating, we want to promise you – it’s not as scary as you might think. With common sense, a little know-how, and some tips from the experts (psst- that’s us!) you’ll be on your way to finding fun dates, steamy hook ups, and who knows, maybe even a long-time-lover right here on OBC (or, I dunno, some other site, if you feel like being lame [just kidding {kind of}]).
Before trying on outfits for your first date or slipping some condoms in your wallet in case you seal the deal, you’ve gotta take the first baby steps of online dating: creating a profile, adding pictures, and browsing the crowd. Here are three tips to make each of those first baby steps succeed.
1. The Profile
Instead of meeting random singles and getting upset that they aren’t what you’re looking for, use your profile to weed out the folks you won’t click with, and reel in the ones you will fit with like a glove.
That means, of course, saying things like “just got out of a long relationship, looking for something casual and fun” if you’re not on the hunt for a wedding. Or saying “down for fun dates, chatting, and hanging out – nothin’ crazy on the first date” if you’re not looking for a one-night stand. It’s easy to explain honestly what you’re looking for in a date without sounding like a drip. So stick with positive, straight-forward words that can’t be misconstrued, and you’ll be far more likely to get messages from people who are exactly what you’re looking for!
2. Adding pictures
If we’re all honest with ourselves, the first connection we have with potential dates is almost always physical. Someone’s beautiful eyes, friendly smile, or curvy shape can catch your attention in ways that a conversation just can’t manage. So make sure your pictures express who YOU are. Perhaps have a photo of you partaking in a favorite hobby, like hiking or fixing cars. If you have someone available, maybe have a friend take a pic so they can get a good body shot without having to abuse the bathroom mirror. And of course, make sure you use a decent camera (easy – all smart phones work well) – you don’t want a blurry, out-of-focus pic to make someone wonder if you’ve got something to hide.
Browsing the crowd
Here’s where it starts getting fun. Checking out members of a dating site will make you realize that there is just as much diversity online as there is in the real world (perhaps even more than your regular stomping grounds). So start searching! Look first at people near you, since the last thing you want is to find out your dream date lives on the other side of the country. If there is an option, like on OBC, save your favorite members to a list (like our Booty Call list feature) so that you can go back and check them out later. And remember to be open-minded – sure you can search by ethnicity or height, but you never know – your perfect match might be the opposite of what you expect!
