Labiaplasty Documentary is Informative, Weird
In a new British documentary, by filmmaker Ellie Land, three women discuss their decisions to get Labiaplasties – the elective, cosmetic surgery to “tidy up” the area surrounding the vagina, a procedure that is becoming more and more common by the year. The documentary, Centrefold, just got a trailer, and it seems as though the film will be a precarious combination of informative and TOTALLY AWKWARD, especially when that woman calls her labia “dark and shriveled up.” See for yourself:

The concept of cosmetic surgery has always been a controversial one to me. On one hand, if a woman wants to enhance her body in order to feel more self-confident and comfortable in her skin, I say GO FOR IT! However, it’s possible that the self-confidence issues run far deeper than the skin, and that the surgery (and it’s costs… a labiaplasty can run you about $4000) won’t fix the problems, and will instead be a wallet-raping band aid on a much larger wound.
I’m not sure I’ll get around to watching a black and white stick figure-filled movie about a woman who dreams of her labia being a “long, long scarf wrapped tightly around her neck,” but I give credit to the filmmaker for bringing a fairly unknown subject to light. Even if getting stiches on your hoo-ha makes ME want to shrivel up.
