Is Ben and Jerry’s Linsanity Ice Cream Racist?
Well, it looks like Ben and Jerry’s ice cream company has decided to jump on the recent racism trend that has exploded since the success of Knicks star Jeremy Lin.
According to Gothamist, the Vermont-based company created a new flavor of ice cream called “Taste the Lin-sanity,” which in it’s first batch included PIECES OF FORTUNE COOKIES. The company quickly altered the recipe so it is now vanilla ice cream swirls with lychee honey swirls and waffle cookies (which sounds pretty damn tasty, mind you), although the company was forced to apologize for its insensitive (and stereotypical) approach to an “Asian-inspired” food.
“We offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Lin-Sanity flavor,” they said in a statement.
“We are proud and honored to have Jeremy Lin hail from one of our fine, local universities and we are huge sports fans,” Ben & Jerry’s said in the news release. “Our intention was to create a flavor to honor Jeremy Lin’s accomplishments and his meteoric rise in the NBA, and recognize that he was a local Harvard graduate. We try (to) demonstrate our commitment as a Boston-based, valued-led business and if we failed in this instance we offer our sincere apologies.”
What do you think? Was Ben and Jerry’s fortune cookie ice cream racist? Or just a silly way to pay tribute to a rising Asian star?
