Will Chris Paul Go to the Lakers?
Basketball players and fans alike rejoiced yesterday as news hit that the NBA lockout was finally over. Men around the nation breathed a sigh of relief that they wouldn’t have to go like, two whole months without any sort of professional sports, because GOD FORBID, you know? Needless to say, excitement over the end of the lockout was overshadowed by news that Hornets All-Star Guard Chris Paul would be traded to the Lakers, sending Pau Gasol to Houston and Lamar Odom to New Orleans. Twitter and Facebook exploded in excitement, both positive and otherwise, about the big changes about to go down in the NBA.
According to The Huffington Post, however, the deal will not go down as planned:
“It’s not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons,” league spokesman Mike Bass said.
Yahoo Sports reported that NBA Commissioner David Stern killed the trade after several owners complained. Citing anonymous sources, Yahoo reported Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was one of the most vocal owners upset about the deal, done the same day as the end of the lockout, which was supposed to restore competitive balance in the league.
Of course, this left both fans AND the players involved in said proposed deal confused and disheartened. Lamar Odom reportedly wrote on Twitter “When a team trades u and it doesn’t go down? Now what?”
What will go down next in the NBA is unknown, but with training camps and free agency beginning today, we’re sure we’ll hear more about the deals to come as the week passes. We’ll keep you updated.
