Pacquiao Vs Marquez: Who Really Won?
Well folks, I’m back from Vegas. It was, um… a party. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Vegas during a fight weekend or a holiday weekend or a WEEKEND AT ALL (I normally hit Sin City on a Tuesday to avoid the crowds), but that place is INSANE. There were boxing fans of both Pacquiao and Marquez EVERYWHERE, talking smack to each other both before and after the fight. Which brings us to the main event.
The welterweight fight was anything but “insane,” unless you count the fans throwing beer cans at judges for allowing what looked to be like a Marquez victory to be instead awarded to Pacquiao by majority. Pacquiao’s interview was drowned out by even more boos, and even Manny himself felt the need to defend himself during a news conference, saying “it is clear that I won the fight,” although thousands of fans clearly disagreed. According to the NYTimes, this was due to Marquez’ performance, which blew most spectators away:
Marquez fought a brilliant tactical fight. He flummoxed Pacquiao by waiting for him, then counterpunching, with left jabs and right hooks and right hands. Whenever Pacquiao moved forward, Marquez hit him square and hard. He never allowed Pacquiao to mount the offensive onslaughts that marked Pacquiao’s rise to stardom, never allowed Pacquiao to find any kind of rhythm or dictate the bout’s pace.
Now talk is turning to a FOURTH Marquez fight, one that might FINALLY decide who is the better fighter. Until then, the answer to that remains up in the air. I can only hope that I’ll be able to be a part of a fantastic show like that once again.
